Hybrid Learning

After the switch to Emergency Remote Teaching took place, it became clear that a longer term strategy would be required in our Business School, to accommodate the necessity to rapidly switch between on campus and online teaching; to deal with reduced class sizes and to handle participants who had to isolate or were unable to travel.

A number of principles were advocated in this approach –

  • Students would be be offered teaching or equivalent activities for the same amount of time every week as pre pandemic.
  • Synchronous teaching would be in-class and online in 90 minute blocks.
  • Asynchronous activities would be delivered through the University VLE (Canvas).
  • A representation of all activities would be present in the VLE for students who could not attend using mechanisms such as pre-recorded slides and discussion forum.

Pedagogic approaches derived from Networked Learning, the Community of Inquiry framework, and a Learning Design framework were chosen as the basis for this hybrid delivery.

These pages describe the process we followed in moving to our Hybrid model and share the materials that were used in CPD sessions for staff.
